Newsreader feed is one of the most useful and effective means of promoting and marketing your online business or website. By creating a feed for your website you can inform your visitors or customers whenever you add new content to your website, add new products to your online store or have special offers to announce.

A feed is one of the most effective ways to encourage visitors to return to your site and generate repeat business from your customers.

Regular web users like to keep track of the content of many favorite websites, feeds inform users of new or updated content on websites without them having to visit each website to see if there is anything new. Traffic ramp is a sudden jump in traffic for a website. A big jump. As an example lets say a website is getting 2000 uniques a day. When it hits traffic ramp it may increase to 50000 a day (for example).

Every successful website gets the traffic ramp at some point.

A website may hit the traffic ramp in many ways. An exposure in a popular newspaper, or website or such gives a website boost in traffic. There are various other methods webmasters use to get a website hit the traffic ramp. Social networking sites could be one option amongst them.

Should You Buy Lot of Domains ?

I know a person who bought several hundred domains redirecting to his main site. Does it really help as per SEO or marketing anyway?

From what I have seen, it really doesn't help much. That person I mentioned above gets less then 10 hits from those domain redirects; whereas he have to spend several hundred dollars maintaining those domains. Unless they are premium domains or highly searched, buying tons of domains does not really help in marketing.

If you happen to have decided to have many domains whats the best practice? Best would not be redirecting to your parent site. Best approach is having separate websites for each of them. Make sure they have different contents with links to your parent site. As you link to the parent site put your target keywords as link anchor text. If you do that, your domains will get indexed on search engines for different keywords. Also gets your parent site backlinks.

"Tell a friend" link?

I'm thinking of placing a link on my site to "tell a friend". It would then take them to a form page where they'd fill out their email address and the email address of the friend they want to refer the site to. The script I found today for that also sends me an email every time someone uses that form and lets me know of the email addresses entered there.

Has anyone else put this on their site? If so, have you had much or any success from it?

Wave Like Traffic Nature

This may sound funny, but you may have seen it already; traffic to our sites(except the sudden changes) follow the wave like pattern like the picture below.

So why this happen? Lets say your main source of traffic is Google (as an example) As you know search engines(SE) crawl your site once in a few days. Right after they crawl the site, your traffic goes up, then it goes down after some time until next crawl.

Article marketing used to be one of the top choices few years back. Now things changed a bit. But still lot of marketers find article marketing a very useful tool. Specially for off site optimization it really serves the purpose. Problem is you have to write a good article, thats the key.

StumbleUpon helps to bring instant traffic, lots of them, in very short time. Which is a very good way of introducing a site to many prospective visitors.

Problem is average SU visitors spend about 2 seconds on a site before they move to next one. Conversions are extremely poor.

Although with all the downside lot of people are up for SU marketing. So am I sometimes.

Like to hear your opinions/experience.

I tried that sometimes ago then I realized its really doesn't worth much considering the time I put there and the traffic I get in return. But I have mention one good thing about Yahoo Answers is, I still get occasional traffic from them. Now I think if I have spare time I could go ahead do answering there, and get some traffic.

We have seen people asking "Is traffic from social networking/bookmarking sites any good".

Before answering the question, I will tell you about the behavior of the visitors from social networking sites. Visitors from those sites are mostly educated visitors(except stumble upon). When they click on the link to come to your page, they intend to read the page because they think it may be interesting to read.

Now most of these visitors will leave your site after reading the page. How do you make these visitors stick around? Here are some tips I think useful:

- Don't submit junk materials to social networking sites. If you do that you will destroy your branding.
- Make a related pages list at the bottom of each page. So when they goes to the end of the page reading they may be interested in reading more.
- Submit regularly. This helps greatly bringing in new visitors and chances are a small percentage of them would like your site and stick around.
- Put the vote buttons on the page, so visitors can vote the page for you. This helps bringing in more visitors from social networking sites.

Wordpress robots.txt tips against douplicate content

Been getting some questions about my robots.txt file and what certain things do.

Thankfully some regular expressions are supported in the robots.txt (but not many).

$ in regex means the end of the file. So if you do .php$ it your robots.txt that means it will match anything that ends in .php

This is really handy when you want to block all .exe .php or other files. For example:

Disallow: /*.PDF$
Disallow: /*.jpeg$
Disallow: /*.exe$

Specifically this is some of the things I use in my robots.txt

Disallow: /*? - this blocks all urls with a ? in them. A good way to avoid duplicate content issues with wordpress blogs. Obviously you only want to use this if you have changed your url structure to not be 100% ?=.

Disallow: /*.php$ - This blocks all .php files. Another good way to avoid duplicate content with a wordpress blog.

Disallow: /*.inc$ - you should not be showing .inc or include files to bots (google code search will eat you alive)

Disallow: /*.css$ - why would you show css files for indexing seems silly.. The wildcard is used here in case there are many css files.

Disallow: */feed/ feeds being indexed dilute your site equity. The wildcard * is used incase there is preceding chars.

Disallow: */trackback/ - no reason a trackback url should be indexed. The wildcard * is used incase there is preceding chars.

Disallow: /page/ - assloads of duplicate content in pages for wordpress.

Disallow: /tag/ - more douplicate content.

Disallow: /category/ - even more duplicate content.

SO what if you want to ALLOW a page. Like for instance my serps tool is serps.php and from the above rules that would not fly.

Allow: /serps.php - this does the trick!

Keep in mind I am not a SEO but I have picked up a few tricks along the way.

You may know of Alexa.com only for checking site stats. Well, you can use Alexa for getting some traffic as well.

You probably have seen Alexa shows related sites for every website you search on Alexa. Alexa also provides an interface for you to suggest a related website.

Best approach is finding the sites related to your niche and submit your website as related website for those.

You probably will get little traffic. May be 10 per month. I don't mind doing a 2 hour job for getting 10 per month, 120 per year visitors, or more. Do you?
